Of Hats, Harmonicas, and Kazoos

Almost three years ago, while running sound at Common Grounds Coffee House, I met a tall, peculiar, and incredibly polite fellow who would forever change the way I thought about Kazoo.  And he had one hell of a nice hat.
Falling somewhere between Americana, Folk, and Ragtime Ian Thomas brings his unstoppable stage presence to audiences all over the world, leaving them clapping, dancing, and singing at the tops of their lungs.  And, this Saturday, you to will have the chance to fall under his charms once more on The Boomslang Carnival Main Stage at 6:00pm.

Have Balls, Will Juggle

About a year ago I was eating fire at the Lexington Farmer's Market WAY too early on a Saturday morning.  Wile searching for a pitch I spotted in the distance what could only be juggling balls flying well above the crowd.  I finagled my way into a spot where I could see what the hubub was about and my jaw dropped.  Here was a kid no older than 18 juggling more pieces than I'd ever seen any professional attempt with the ease of riding a bike.  He went on to showcase many ball and pin tricks I'd never seen in any circus or sideshow.  And I'd seen a few.

After only a little begging he agreed to do some shows with us and I've never ceased to be amazed by his talent.  It seems like every time he performs I see something I've never seen before.

Which is what all this is really all about.

His name is Michael Sikora.  And you can see him this Saturday.  At The Boomslang Carnival.

It's like Gulliver's Travels, but with ukulele

Tinyfolk is Russ Woods and he is not tiny.  Which is not to say that he's big, of course.  Really, if hard pressed, we'd have to admit that he's a pretty skinny guy and, honestly, his baritone ukulele isn't exactly the monster truck of instruments.  And furthermore, when he opens his mouth it wouldn't come a much of a surprise if his songs do seem tiny, or at least careful, or sometimes even transient.

But like a clown car or one of those foam dinosaurs that you soak in water overnight, Tinyfolk has more to offer than first appearances might suggest.  He's the grower-not-shower of DIY, with a catalog of songs that is rather intimidating in both size and ability.  With creative musical hooks and a discerning existentialist bent, Tinyfolk is pop for people with an appreciation for aesthetic and a penchant for adorable animals.

Also, let's be honest.  Who doesn't like tiny things, anyway?

Tinyfolk will be playing at the Boomslang Carnival on Saturday, September 11 on the main stage.

Check out Russ's music!

Peace be with you,

The Macabre Caricatures of Ms. Summer Smith

Summer has been an artist for as long as I've known her. With her talent for drawing and painting, she chose to do something rather noble: studying anatomy and physiology in order to use her powers of pen and paintbrush for the advancement of medicine and the general welfare of humankind. For the Boomslang Carnival she will achieve her ultimate destiny, the pinnacle of her life's work: using her knowledge of the human body to make the most frighteningly accurate and gory caricatures you've ever seen. Be it vampire, zombie, or twisted backwoods tentacle creature, she'll be there to draw you as the monster you've always wanted to be.  Or, if you _really_ want, she'll create a more tame caricature for all you hemophobics out there.

Sound/Vision

In keeping with The Boomslang Carnival's mission to bring you a complete visual and aural experience we're happy to announce the appearance of Lexington's own Sound/Vision.  Made up of some of the city's most creative and talented musical minds, S/V promises a musical showcase unlike anything you've come to expect from a typical rock show.  Blending incredible rhythmic prowess and melodic creativity with immersive audience interaction and stunning visuals, these guys will leave you in wonder.  And you may not even see them coming...

Ventriloquism Like You've Never Understood It Before

What do you get when you mix a bottle of whiskey, a can of Crisco, a rubber glove, and a belligerently alcoholic comedian?  Ladies and Gentlemen, The Boomslang Carnival planning committee is proud to present:  Jeff Dumbass and Falafel!  I've seen a lot of strange and interesting acts in my time, but I've never seen anything quite like the antics of this Dumbass and his dummy.  They've built a career on their incredible personal chemistry, playing off each other's lines as if they were controlled by one brain.  And don't think you'll see any moving lips with this ventriloquist!  Oh, no!  In their most famous and charming act, you'll even see Falafel SING while Jeff chugs 90proof liquor!  Ladies and Gents, keep in mind, this might not be one for the kids...but drop 'em off somewhere.  They'll be fine.  YOU don't want to miss this!
